The Dropbox steps keep files where your team already looks for them: file every signed contract in the client's folder, fetch the price list a supplier drops each week, or send a customer a link to their documents.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.

The steps

Step What it does
Upload a file Puts a file from an earlier step into a folder.
Download a file Fetches a file, for later steps to use.
Find files Searches by name, type and when the file last changed.
Get file details Gives a file's or folder's name, size, path and times, without the file.
List a folder Lists what is in a folder — one item each.
Create a folder Makes a folder.
Move a file or folder Moves it to another folder.
Rename a file or folder Gives it a new name in the same folder.
Copy a file or folder Copies it to another folder.
Delete a file or folder Deletes it. Marked in the picker as deleting.
Create a share link Makes a link to a file or folder, with the choices your Dropbox plan allows.
Save a file from a URL Has Dropbox fetch a file from a web address straight into a folder.

Steps

  1. Select +, then in Apps select Dropbox, or search Dropbox.
  2. Choose the step — for example Upload a file.
  3. Choose the Connection.
  4. Fill in the step. Folder, File and File or folder open a picker that browses your Dropbox — folders by path, files newest first; each also takes a value from an earlier step, such as /Clients/{{ trigger.company }}, or a file's id.
    • Upload a file — the Folder, for example /Clients/Northwind Logistics/Contracts (empty: the top folder); the File name, for example Contract {{ trigger.orderNumber }}.pdf (empty: the file's own name); the File, from an earlier step; and If a file has that name — Rename the new one (the default; Dropbox adds a number), Replace it or Fail the step.
    • Download a file — the File. Get file details, Delete a file or folder — the File or folder.
    • Find files — the Folder to search, with its subfolders (empty: all of Dropbox); Name contains; Type — PDF, Image, Spreadsheet, Document or Other, by the file's extension; and Changed since, a date such as 2026-10-01. Dropbox's search has no date filter, so Bizomate applies Changed since to what the search finds.
    • List a folder — the Folder, and Include subfolders if you want everything below it.
    • Create a folder — In folder (empty: the top folder) and the Name.
    • Move a file or folder, Copy a file or folder — the File or folder, and the To folder. It keeps its name.
    • Rename a file or folder — the File or folder, and the New name.
    • Create a share link — the File or folder; Who can open it (Anyone with the link, or — on a Dropbox team — Only people in your team); They can (View or Edit); and Stops working on (In 1 day, In 7 days, In 30 days, In 90 days, or a date from an earlier step). Each lists only what your Dropbox account can use; where its plan has no end dates, Stops working on lists nothing and a line says so. Left empty, they follow your Dropbox settings, and the link never stops.
    • Save a file from a URL — the URL, the Folder and the File name (empty: the last part of the URL). Dropbox fetches the file in the background; the step waits up to a minute for it.
  5. Select Run this step, then check Output. A test of Upload, Move, Rename, Copy, Delete, Create a folder, Create a share link or Save a file from a URL really does it.

Output

Step What comes back
Upload a file The file — id, name, path, folder, isFolder, size, modifiedAt, revision, url — and outcome: created, replaced or renamed.
Download a file The same details, and the file itself for later steps — attach it to an email, say.
Find files count, files (each with the same details) and first; found is false when nothing matches, and note says when the search stopped at its limit.
Get file details id, name, path, folder, isFolder, size, modifiedAt, revision, url.
List a folder One item per file or folder, with the same details; the next steps run once each.
Create a folder id, name, path, url.
Move a file or folder Its details at the new place, and previousPath.
Rename a file or folder Its details, and previousName.
Copy a file or folder The copy's details, and fromPath.
Delete a file or folder id, path and deleted — true, or false when nothing was there to delete.
Create a share link url, path, access (public or team — who can open it, as Dropbox settled it) and expiresAt when it has one. A link that was already there comes back, with the choices applied where Dropbox allows.
Save a file from a URL status — complete, with the saved file's details; or in progress, with the path, name and folder it will have, when Dropbox is still fetching it after a minute.

Good to know

  • Files travel with their item to later steps. See Pass files between steps — including the 250 MB limit between steps.
  • Runs once per item. Ten items upload ten files. To work through a list of files, see Repeat steps for each item with Loop over items.
  • Find files' limits. With a name, it looks at the first 1,000 matches Dropbox's search gives; with no name, it looks through up to 10,000 files and folders. Dropbox's search matches whole words and their starts. List a folder gives up to 10,000.
  • Deleted files can be restored in Dropbox under Deleted files — for 30 days on Basic, Plus and Family, 180 days on Professional, Essentials, Standard and Business, and 365 days on Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise and Education.
  • Share links. End dates need Dropbox Professional, Essentials or a team plan. Edit works only for files Dropbox can edit online. A link's They can cannot change once the link exists.
  • A large file from a URL can take longer than a minute. The step still succeeds, with status in progress. To use the file, add a Wait, then Get file details with the path from Save a file from a URL.
  • Paths are not case-sensitive in Dropbox, and always start with /.

If something goes wrong

What the run says Why What to do
"Dropbox refused: path/not_found." Nothing is at that path. Choose it with the picker, or check the value from the earlier step.
"Dropbox refused: path/conflict/file. … is already there, and If a file has that name is Fail the step." A file has that name. Choose Rename the new one or Replace it.
"Dropbox refused: to/conflict/file." Moving, renaming or copying onto a name already taken in that folder. Move or rename the one there first, or choose another folder.
"Dropbox refused: path/insufficient_space." The Dropbox account is full. Free space in Dropbox, or change its plan.
"Dropbox refused: settings_error/not_authorized. This Dropbox account's plan does not allow that on a link — …" A share-link choice the plan does not have, given as a value. Choose from the lists the step offers.
"Dropbox could not save the file from the URL: download_failed." Dropbox could not fetch the address. Check the URL opens without signing in.
"Dropbox is limiting requests from this account (too_many_requests). Try again after 10:52 UTC." Too many requests at once. Set If this step fails to try again later.
"Dropbox refused: missing_scope (…)." The token lacks a permission. See Connect Dropbox.
… is too large to pass between steps — the limit is 250 MB. The file is over 250 MB. Handle it outside Bizomate.
