SendGrid · Send an email — Sends an email through SendGrid — sends one email through your own SendGrid account, from an address SendGrid has verified. Write the subject and message here, or choose one of your dynamic templates and fill in its values.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the step's settings but cannot change them.

Before you start

  • A SendGrid connection in this workspace, with a key that has Mail Send — see Connect SendGrid.
  • A verified sender in SendGrid under Settings › Sender Authentication.
  • To use a template, a dynamic template in SendGrid under Email API › Dynamic Templates.

Steps

  1. Select + where the email should be sent. In the step picker, open Apps, select SendGrid, then Send an email. Or search SendGrid.
  2. In Connection, choose your SendGrid connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
  3. In From, choose the sender — Verified senders in SendGrid. The list reads Loading your senders… first; each shows its address and name, such as orders@consulace.com · Consulace.
  4. In To, the address to send to — Separate several with commas. For example rohan@consulace.com, or a value from an earlier step.
  5. Optional: in Cc and Bcc, more addresses, separated with commas.
  6. Then either write the email:
    • In Subject, the subject.
    • Under Message format, choose Text (the default) or HTML.
    • In Message, the message. Use {{ }} for values from earlier steps.
  7. Or use a template:
    • In Dynamic template, choose it — With a template, Subject and Message are not used — SendGrid fills the template.
    • Under Template data, select Add a field for each {{ }} name the template uses — for example first_name — and in Value what goes in it. The template's {{ }} names and their values.
  8. Optional: under Attachments, select Add a file and drag in a file from an earlier step — A file from an earlier step. See Pass files between steps.
  9. Select Run this step to send a test.

To send from an address not in the list — one on a domain you authenticated in SendGrid, for example — select Use a value beside From and type it. Choose from the list goes back. Refresh reloads the list after you verify a sender.

Output

Field What it is
sent True when SendGrid took the email.
to The addresses it went to, as written in To.
attachments How many files were attached.

Good to know

  • The step succeeds when SendGrid accepts the email, not when it arrives. SendGrid's Activity page shows what happened to it.
  • Up to 10 addresses each in To, Cc and Bcc. Everyone in To sees the others.
  • A template takes over the subject and message — anything in Subject and Message is not sent. Template data values are sent as text.
  • Attachments — SendGrid takes up to 30 MB for the whole email, attachments included.
  • Runs once per item. Ten items send ten emails.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
SendGrid refused: The from address does not match a verified Sender Identity. … From is not verified in SendGrid. SendGrid answers this as a permission problem, so the message may also say to check the connection — the connection is fine. Choose a sender from the list, or verify the address in SendGrid.
SendGrid refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections. The key was deleted, or it has no Mail Send permission. Give the key Mail Send in SendGrid, or reconnect with a new key.
“…” is not an email address. / At most 10 people at a time — this had 12. An address is wrong, or there are too many. Correct them, or send to fewer at a time.
Subject is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. / Message is empty when the step ran — … No template is chosen, and the subject or message came out empty. Fill them in, or choose a template.
Attachment 1 is not a file when the step ran — … The value was not a file in that run. Check the earlier step gave a file.
… is no longer kept — the run it came from has left the history. The file came from an old run. Run the step that makes the file again.
Could not load the senders SendGrid did not give the list, in its own words. "What you set here is kept." Select Try again, or Use a value and type the address.
Nothing to pick — "SendGrid has no verified sender yet. Verify one under Settings › Sender Authentication, then Refresh." No single sender is verified. Verify one, then Refresh — or Use a value.
Nothing to pick — "SendGrid has no dynamic templates. Make one under Email API › Dynamic Templates, or write the message here." There are no dynamic templates. Make one, or write the subject and message.
