Run this step runs the step in front of you, on its own, now. It reads what the steps before it gave in the latest test, so you can change a setting and try again without running everything before it.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors.

Before you start

Run the whole workflow once with Test run, so the earlier steps have something to give. Without a test, the step gets one empty item and values from earlier steps are empty.

Steps

  1. Select the step.
  2. Select Run this step at the bottom of its panel. The button reads Running while it works.

The panel moves to Output with what the step gave. A toast says Step ran — “…” ran on its own. What it gave is on Output. — or Step failed with the reason.

If the step failed in the last test, Output also has Try again, which does the same.

What happens next

  • The step really runs. It sends, adds, or asks as in a full test.
  • It is recorded as a test run of one step, and counts towards the workspace's test runs for the day.
  • The line at the bottom of the panel updates — Last run 12:04 · 1.2 s · 3 items.

Good to know

  • Triggers and Wait cannot run on their own. Use Test run for a trigger; a Wait only pauses a run.
  • It uses the saved draft. Your changes save as you leave each field, so leave the field first.
  • It runs once for each item that reached the step in the latest test.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Step not run — A trigger starts the whole workflow — use Test run. You tried it on a trigger. Use Test run.
Step not run — A Wait only pauses the run — there is nothing to run on its own. You tried it on a Wait. Nothing to run.
Step not run — That step is not in the saved draft. Save, then try again. The step was added a moment ago and has not saved yet. Wait a moment, then try again.
Run this step is greyed out A test run is going. Wait for it to finish, or stop it.
