Sort — Order items by a field — gives back the same items in a different order. Nothing is added or dropped. Use it before a step that should handle the most urgent, the largest or the newest first.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.
Steps
- Select + where the items should be ordered. In the step picker, open Data and select Sort.
- Under Order by, in the BY row, put the field — a field, or {{ from a step — such as
priorityor{{ $json.amount }}. - Choose which way. The words come from the last test's sample: smallest first / largest first for a number, false first / true first for true/false, A → Z / Z → A for anything else — plus oldest first and newest first for dates.
- Select Sort by another field for a tie-breaker — a THEN BY row.
- Test it: 40 items in, 40 out, in the new order.
Output
The same items, in the new order.
Good to know
- Choose oldest first or newest first for dates by hand. A date is text as far as the picker can tell, so it is offered as A → Z until you pick oldest first by hand. A value that does not read as a date then sorts as empty.
- Empty values sort last, always — in both directions.
- Sorting is stable: items that tie keep the order they arrived in.
- Numbers come before text in a field that mixes them.
- It runs once for all the items that reach it. Inside a loop it sorts that batch, not every item.
- With no field chosen, items pass through untouched.
