Two Google Sheets steps read a sheet: Get rows — Reads a Google Sheet's rows, each by its columns' names — and Find a row — The first row whose column holds a value.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.

Before you start

A Google Workspace connection, and a sheet with headings in its first row.

Steps

Get rows:

  1. Select +, then in Apps select Google Sheets, then Get rows.
  2. Choose the Connection, the Spreadsheet (with Choose) and the Sheet.
  3. In Return at most, how many rows — it starts at 100. Rows from the top, below the headings. 1,000 at most.
  4. Under Give them as, choose:
    • One item per row (the default) — the steps after run once per row.
    • One list — One list keeps them together — for a summary of every row in one email.

Find a row:

  1. Select +, then Google Sheets, then Find a row.
  2. Choose the Connection, the Spreadsheet and the Sheet.
  3. In Column, choose the column to look in.
  4. In Holds, the value to look for — Ignoring case and spaces at either end. Nothing found gives found: false, not a failed step.

Output

Get rows, one item per row: each row by its headings — {{ $json.Customer }} — and rowNumber.

Get rows, one list: count, rows (every row), and first.

Find a row: the row by its headings, rowNumber, and found (true) — or only found (false).

Good to know

  • Row numbers count from the top of the sheet, headings as row 1 — so the first row of data is 2. Update a row and Delete a row take this number.
  • An empty heading is named by its column, Column C.
  • Find a row gives the first match from the top.
  • Check found with an IF after Find a row before using the row.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
The sheet Orders has no headings in its first row — add them, then choose its columns. Row 1 is empty. Add headings.
Customer is no longer a column in Orders's first row. Refresh the columns and map it again. The column named in Column has gone. Choose the column again.
Google Sheets refused: … Google refused — the file was unshared or deleted. Pick the spreadsheet again.
Holds is empty when the step ran — … Nothing to look for. Fill in Holds.
