Switch — Named paths, plus a catch-all — sorts items into named paths: Sales, Support, Billing. Each item goes down the first path whose rule it meets. Anything that meets none goes down Everything else, or is dropped.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.
Steps
Select + where the items are sorted. In the step picker, open Logic and select Switch.
It starts with Path 1 and Everything else.
Under Paths, give the first path a name — select Path 1 and type, for example, Sales.
Set its rule: a value, how it compares, and what with — the same rows Filter uses. Conditions inside a path join with AND. Select Add condition for another.
Select Add path for each more path. “Path 2” is ready for a name and a rule.
Put the paths in order — the narrowest first. Drag a path by its number, or use the up arrow on it. The first path whose rule matches takes the item. Order matters, so drag the narrow ones up.
Under Everything else, choose Send unmatched items here (on), or turn it off to drop them.
Add steps under each path on the canvas.
The card reads Switch · 3 paths.
Delete a path
- Select the bin on the path, Delete this path.
- The confirmation says what goes with it — A path and what hangs off it are one thing, so its steps go with it — there is nowhere else for them to go. — and where its items go instead: Items that would have taken this path go to Everything else instead.
- Select Delete the path.
Output
Each item goes on unchanged, down the path it took. On Output, each item shows the path it took — a label on the item, not a field in it. After a test, Output also counts them: 40 items in, 38 items out — 12 Sales, 26 Support, and, when dropping, 2 dropped — the only place this number appears.
Good to know
- For "either of two things", make two paths. The first match wins, so they cannot both fire.
- Dropped items are not an error. They are not written down anywhere and do not appear on Input, Output or the run — only the count on this step's Output says how many there were.
- You can only drop unmatched items while nothing hangs off Everything else. Steps hang off Everything else, so what it gets cannot be dropped. Remove them to drop unmatched items instead.
- A path with no rule never matches. A test sends what it would have taken on down the paths below it.
- Renaming or reordering paths never rewires the canvas.
- A Merge after a Switch lists its paths by name.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| This path has no rule, so nothing would ever take it. The step reads Needs setup and Publish lists it. | A path's conditions are empty. | Give it a rule, or delete it. |
| Two paths called Sales. Rename one — a merge lists paths by name, so two of them cannot both be right. | Two paths share a name. | Rename one. |
| Needs setup: add a path. | Every path was deleted. | Select Add path. |
| Path not added — … / Path not deleted — … | The change could not be made. | Reload and try again. |
