App triggers — Google Calendar · New or updated event and Google Sheets · New row — check the app on a schedule once the workflow is published. If the app refuses a check, the trigger says so on its settings, keeps trying, and pauses the workflow after an hour so nobody is left wondering.

Who can do this

Anyone can see a trigger's status. Workspace Admins and Editors see Reconnect and Check now.

Steps

See what a trigger is doing:

  1. Open the workflow in the designer and select the trigger.
  2. Read the status under its settings:
    • Checking every 5 minutes — Last checked 10:45 · next 10:50, then Recent checks: Nothing new, 2 found · 2 runs, or Failed.
    • Not checking since 10:45 — with the reason, and Nothing is lost — what arrives meanwhile is picked up by the first check that works.

Fix a failing trigger:

  1. Read the reason. Most often the connection needs reconnecting: … refused the check: … The connection may need reconnecting, or lacks permission.
  2. Select Reconnect. Sign in to the service again; you come back to the step.
  3. Select Check now. A toast says Checking now — The next check starts within half a minute.
  4. If the workflow was paused, switch it on again on the Workflows list.

What happens next

  • A check that works clears the failure. What arrived while it was failing is picked up in that check.
  • After an hour of failing checks, the workflow is switched off and shows Paused by a failing check — The owner and admins were told at 11:45. Switch the workflow on once it is fixed. The workspace's Admins and Editors get a notification: … is paused — Its trigger has failed every check for an hour: … Nothing is lost — switch it on once it is fixed and it carries on from where it stopped.
  • Switching it back on starts its checks again at once.

Good to know

  • Every 5 minutes on paid plans, every 15 on Free.
  • Only checks that found something become runs and count.
  • The list of checks keeps one day.
  • Each check carries on from where the last one stopped, so nothing is missed while it fails — up to 100 new things start runs in one check, the rest in the next.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Could not reach Google Sheets: … / … did not answer within 30 seconds. The service did not answer. Wait for the next check, or select Check now.
… refused the check: … The service turned the check away — the connection expired, lost a permission, or cannot see the file or calendar any more. Reconnect, check the file or calendar is still shared, then Check now.
Choose the spreadsheet and its sheet. The Sheets trigger has no spreadsheet or sheet. Choose them, then publish again.
