The AI steps — Anthropic Claude, OpenAI and Google Gemini — Ask a model, get text or fields. Use them to sort an enquiry, summarise an email, or pull an order number out of free text. Each runs on your company's own API key, so the cost is on your account with that provider.

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.

Before you start

Add a connection with your API key for the provider — Anthropic, OpenAI or Google Gemini — in Connections. Your company's own API key, kept in Connections.

Steps

  1. Select + where the question should be asked. In the step picker, open AI and select the provider's step.
  2. In Connection, choose the connection with your key.
  3. Under Model, choose one:
    • Anthropic Claude: Claude Sonnet (default), Claude Opus, Claude Haiku.
    • OpenAI: GPT-5 mini (default), GPT-5.
    • Google Gemini: Gemini 2.5 Flash (default), Gemini 2.5 Pro.
  4. Optional: in Instructions, say who the model is and how to answer — You sort customer messages for a stationery supplier. Answer with one word only.
  5. In Prompt, ask the question, with the item's values in {{ }} — Is this sales, support or other? {{ $json.text }}
  6. Under Give me back, choose:
    • Fields (the default) — named answers later steps can use one by one.
    • Text — one answer, as text.
  7. For Fields, add a row per answer under Fields: the name, and what goes in it. The description decides the type: Say what goes in each: “sales | support | other” is one of those, “a number from 0 to 1” a number, “true or false” true or false. For example:
    • category — sales | support | other
    • confidence — a number from 0 to 1
  8. Select Run this step, then check Output. Pin it while you build the steps after — see Pin a step's output.

Output

  • Fields: each field by its name — {{ steps.sort_the_enquiry.category }} — and usage.
  • Text: text, and usage.
  • usage holds model, tokensIn, tokensOut and seconds. Output shows them: tokens in, tokens out, took — Every test run of this step spends them again — which is what Pin is for.

The card reads Claude · Get fields, OpenAI · Get text and so on.

Good to know

  • Each item is a separate question, and a separate cost. Twenty items, twenty calls.
  • Answers are capped at 2,048 tokens.
  • Test runs spend tokens. Pin the output once you have a good answer.
  • Fields are always all filled. The model must give every field named; a field with | choices gets one of them.
  • For a busy account, set If this step fails to try again.

If something goes wrong

What the run says Why What to do
Anthropic refused the API key. Replace it on Connections. The key is wrong, revoked or lacks access. Replace the key on Connections.
OpenAI says too many requests, or the account is out of credit. Set this step to try again, or check the account. A rate limit, or no credit left. Check the account with the provider; set the step to try again.
Google answered 400: … The provider refused the request. Read the provider's reason; check the model and prompt.
Anthropic did not give back the fields asked for. Try again, or make the instructions plainer. The answer was not in the fields asked for. Make Instructions plainer, or the fields fewer.
Name at least one field to get back, or ask for text. Fields chosen with no rows. Add a field, or choose Text.
Could not reach OpenAI: … / OpenAI did not answer in time. The provider did not answer. Try again.
Prompt is empty when the step ran — … The prompt came out empty. Check the values it reads.
