Two list steps read a list in the workspace. Find rows — Reads. Every matching row goes on as its own item. Find one row — Reads. One item out, whatever happens — use it to look something up, such as the account manager for a customer.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.

Before you start

A list in this workspace. See What a list is not for.

Steps

  1. Select +, then in the step picker open Data and select Find rows or Find one row. Or search list.
  2. In List, choose the list. The card reads, for example, Customers · Find rows.
  3. Under Show rows where, select Add condition for each condition: the column, how it compares, and the value — a value, or {{ from a step. Conditions join with AND. With none: No conditions: every row matches.
  4. Choose the order — Sort by for Find rows, If more than one matches, take the first by for Find one row — a column and a direction, or the order rows were added.
  5. Find rows: in Most rows to bring back, the most — it starts at 100. The step stops there. 500 is the most. Each row found goes on as its own item.
  6. Find one row: under If nothing is found, choose
    • Carry on with nothing — The next steps get an empty item. Check it with a condition. The default.
    • Stop the run — The run fails here and says which row it looked for.
  7. Select Run this step.

How each column compares

Column type Comparisons
Text is, is not, contains, is empty, is not empty
Number is, is not, greater than, less than, at least, at most, is empty, is not empty
True/false is, is empty, is not empty
Date and time before, after, is empty, is not empty

is not includes rows with nothing in that column.

Sort directions: A to Z / Z to A for text, smallest first / largest first for numbers, oldest first / newest first for dates.

Output

  • Find rows: one item per row, each column by its name — {{ $json.account_manager }}. No rows found gives no items, and the steps after it do not run.
  • Find one row: one item — the row's columns and found (true), or only found (false).

A list step's columns are offered in {{ before any test.

Good to know

  • Find one row always gives one item, so the steps after it always run. Put an IF on found after it.
  • Reads keep working when the list is full; only writes stop.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Nothing in Customers matched email is rohan@consulace.com. Find one row is set to Stop the run and found nothing. Expected if the row should exist; otherwise choose Carry on with nothing.
The condition on Amount needs a value. A condition's value came out empty. Fill it in, or check the value it reads.
The list is gone — … is not in this workspace. It was deleted, or this workflow came in from somewhere else and nothing matched. The step does nothing and the run fails here. The list was deleted, or the workflow was imported. Choose another list, or (Admins) Create … in Lists.
A column it uses is gone A column named in a condition or sort was deleted. Select Show me the columns, then choose again.
Needs setup: choose a list. No list chosen. Choose one.
