Twilio · Get a message — A message's status, price and any error — reads a message your Twilio account sent or received. Use it after a send step, with a Wait between, to find out whether the message was delivered.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the step's settings but cannot change them.

Before you start

  • A Twilio connection in this workspace — see Connect Twilio.
  • The message's SID. Send an SMS and Send a WhatsApp message (Twilio) give it as id.

Steps

  1. Select + after the step that sent the message. A Wait step first gives Twilio time to deliver it — see Pause a run with Wait.
  2. In the step picker, open Apps, select Twilio, then Get a message.
  3. In Connection, choose your Twilio connection.
  4. In Message SID, drag in the sending step's id — for example {{ steps.send_an_sms.id }}. Or type a SID; it starts with SM or MM.
  5. Select Run this step to read it.

Output

Field What it is
id The message's SID.
status Where it has got to: queued, sending, sent, delivered, undelivered or failed — or read for WhatsApp, received for a message sent to you.
from, to The numbers it went from and to.
body The text.
price, priceUnit What Twilio charged, as a negative number, and the currency — for example -0.0475 and USD. Empty until Twilio has worked it out.
errorCode, errorMessage Why it was not delivered, in Twilio's words. Empty when nothing went wrong.

To act on the result, follow it with If — for example, when status is undelivered, send an email instead. See Choose a path with If.

Good to know

  • Delivery takes time. Straight after sending, status is usually queued or sent. delivered depends on the phone network reporting back, which some countries and networks do not do.
  • It reads; it changes nothing.
  • Runs once per item.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Twilio refused: The requested resource … was not found No message with that SID in this account. Check the SID comes from a send step that used the same connection.
Message SID is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. The value came out empty. Check the step it reads from ran for this item.
Twilio refused: Authenticate Check the connection's details on Connections. The Auth Token was changed in Twilio. Revoke the connection and reconnect it with the new token.
