Two Slack steps change a message a workflow posted earlier: Update a message — Changes a message posted earlier — for a status that moves on, "New lead" to "Lead assigned to Rohan Mehta"; and Delete a message — Removes a message posted earlier.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.

Before you start

  • A Slack connection in this workspace — see Connect Slack.
  • The message's ts and channel from the step that posted it — for example {{ steps.post_a_message.ts }}.

Steps

Update a message:

  1. Select +, then in Apps select Slack, then Update a message.
  2. In Connection, choose your Slack connection.
  3. In Channel, choose the channel the message is in.
  4. In Message, put its ts — The message's ts, from the step that posted it.
  5. In New message, type the text that replaces it, with {{ }} for values from earlier steps.
  6. If the message was posted with Post as me, set Posted as me to Yes — On when you posted it with Post as me — Slack lets only whoever posted a message change it.
  7. Select Run this step.

Delete a message:

  1. Select +, then Slack, then Delete a message.
  2. Choose the Connection and the Channel.
  3. In Message, put its ts.
  4. If it was posted with Post as me, set Posted as me to Yes — On when you posted it with Post as me — Slack lets only whoever posted a message delete it.
  5. Select Run this step. A test deletes the message for real.

Output

Step Fields
Update a message channel, ts, text (the new text), user, threadTs.
Delete a message channel, ts, deleted (true).

Good to know

  • Only the poster can change a message. A message the app posted is changed with Posted as me on No; one you posted with Post as me, on Yes. Neither step can change other people's messages.
  • Posted as me acts as whoever set it to Yes, as Post as me does — so it changes only that person's messages.
  • Deleting cannot be undone in Slack.
  • Runs once per item.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Slack only lets the one who posted a message change it — the app, or you with Post as me. Posted as me does not match who posted it, or someone else posted it. Set Posted as me to match the step that posted it.
Slack cannot find that message — check the message's ts from the earlier step. The ts or channel is wrong, or the message is gone. Check Message and Channel read the posting step's values.
Message is empty when the step ran — … No ts came through. Check the earlier step gave one.
Bizomate is not in this channel. Type /invite @Bizomate in the channel, then run it again. The app is not in the channel. Invite it.
… has not connected their own account for Post as me. They connect it once from the connection on Connections. Posted as me is on without an own account. Connect it, or set it to No.
