Split Out — One item per value in a list — takes a field that holds a list and makes one item from each value in it. An order with four lines becomes four items, so the next step runs once per line.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.
Steps
- Select + after the step whose items hold the list. In the step picker, open Data and select Split Out.
- In The field that holds a list, put the field — lines, or {{ from a step — such as
lines, order.linesor{{ steps.query.rows }}. After a test, a field the test saw as a list shows List of 4 beside it. Only fields the last test saw as a list are marked. Without a test, type the name. - Choose Keep the other fields on each new item. On (the default), the item's other fields — order_no and customer are copied onto every line. Off: Only the value goes on. Nothing else from the item comes with it.
- Optional: in Each one is called, name the field each value goes in. The field's own name, unless you change it. A step after this reads it as, for example,
{{ $json.lines.sku }}. - Test it. What comes out says what happened: 1 item in, 4 items out — 4 lines.
Output
One item per value in each item's list. Each holds the value under its name, plus — if kept — the item's other fields. The list field itself is not copied onto each new item.
Good to know
- An empty list gives nothing out from that item, and that is not an error.
- A list read from another step (
{{ steps.… }}) is left where it is; only a field of the item itself is taken off the new items. - To run several steps per value, Loop Over Items with Items from does the same splitting with a path of steps. See Repeat steps for each item with Loop Over Items.
If something goes wrong
| What the run says | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The field that holds a list is empty. Name it in the step's settings. | The field box is empty. | Name the field. |
| There is no “lines” on the item, so there is nothing to split. | The item has no field by that name. | Check the name on the step's Input tab. |
| “lines” holds "SKU-4411", which is text, not a list. | The field is not a list. | Point at a field that holds a list. |
| Needs setup: fill in the field that holds a list. — and under the box, Name the field that holds the list. | The box is empty at publishing. | Fill it in. |
