Set / Edit Fields — Add, change or drop fields — shapes the item before the next step: add a field, overwrite one, turn text into a number, or send on only the fields you name.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.
Steps
- Select + where the fields should be set. In the step picker, open Data and select Set / Edit Fields.
- Under Fields to set, fill in the first row:
- The name, in field_name — letters, numbers and _, starting with a letter. For example total_with_tax.
- The type, from the list beside it — see below.
- The value, in A value, or type {{ — a fixed value, or
{{ }}from an earlier step.
- Select Add a field for more. Remove one with the cross on its row.
- Choose Keep everything else on the item. On (the default), the item keeps its other fields and gains or changes these. Turn it off to send only these fields on.
The types
The type is explicit because a number that arrives as text is the most common reason a later step fails.
| Type | What the value becomes |
|---|---|
| Text | Text. A number or list is written out as text. |
| Number | A number. 64200 or 64200.50. Empty stays empty. |
| True / false | true or false. yes, 1, no and 0 are read too. |
| Date | A date as 2026-10-05, or a date and time in UTC as 2026-10-05T09:30:00Z. |
| List or object | A list or a group of fields, from JSON or from a step that gave one. |
| As it comes | Whatever the value is, unchanged. |
Output
Each item with the fields set — on top of its other fields, or on their own if Keep everything else on the item is off. Later steps read them as {{ $json.total_with_tax }} or {{ steps.set_edit_fields.total_with_tax }}.
Good to know
- A field already on the item is overwritten by one of the same name.
- Runs once per item.
- Files the item carries stay with it either way.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Use letters, numbers and _, starting with a letter. under a name | The name has spaces or other marks. | Rename it, for example total_with_tax. |
| Needs setup: add at least one field. | No row has a name. | Name at least one field. |
| “total” is set twice. | Two rows have the same name. | Remove or rename one. |
| A run fails with “amount” should be a number, and got “₹64,200”. | The value could not be read as the field's type. | Clean the value first, or use Text or As it comes. |
| “…” should be true or false, … / “…” should be a date, … / “…” should be a list or an object, … | The same, for those types. | As above. |
| The fields could not be read. Set them again. | The stored fields are damaged. | Set them again. |
