Two Mailchimp steps make and send an email campaign. Mailchimp · Create a campaign — Makes a regular campaign, ready to send — makes a campaign for one audience with your subject, sender name and HTML. Mailchimp · Send a campaign — Sends a campaign to its audience now — sends it. Or use Create a campaign alone, and leave the campaign for someone to check and send from Mailchimp.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.
Before you start
- A Mailchimp connection in this workspace — see Connect Mailchimp.
- A reply-to address on a domain verified in Mailchimp.
Steps
Create the campaign:
- Select + where the campaign should be made. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Create a campaign. Or search Mailchimp.
- In Connection, choose your Mailchimp connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
- In Audience, choose who it goes to. The list reads Loading your audiences… first.
- In Subject, the subject line — for example Consulace October update.
- In From name, the name people see it from — Consulace.
- In Reply-to, the address replies go to — An address verified in Mailchimp. For example rohan@consulace.com.
- Optional: in Campaign name, a name to find it by — Inside Mailchimp only. Empty uses the subject.
- In Content (HTML), the email as HTML. Use
{{ }}for values from earlier steps. Mailchimp's own merge tags, such as*|FNAME|*and*|UNSUB|*, work too. - Select Run this step to make it. It appears in Mailchimp under Campaigns as a draft.
Send it:
- After Create a campaign, select +. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Send a campaign.
- In Connection, choose the same Mailchimp connection.
- In Campaign, choose a saved campaign — Campaigns saved and not yet sent, newest first. Or use a value — the campaignId from Create a campaign. After Create a campaign in the same workflow, select Use a value and drag in its
campaignId:{{ steps.create_a_campaign.campaignId }}. - Before you select Run this step: it sends the campaign to everyone in the audience, at once. Try the workflow on a small test audience first.
Output
Create a campaign:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
campaignId |
Mailchimp's id for the campaign. Send a campaign takes it. |
webId |
The number in the campaign's address in Mailchimp. |
status |
save — a draft, not sent. |
Send a campaign:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
campaignId |
The campaign it sent. |
sent |
True when Mailchimp started sending. |
Good to know
- Sending cannot be undone. Once Mailchimp starts, the campaign goes to the whole audience.
- Runs once per item. Ten items make ten campaigns — and Send a campaign sends each. Make sure only one item reaches these steps.
- Mailchimp checks a campaign before it sends: a subject, a from name, a verified reply-to domain, content, and an unsubscribe link (
*|UNSUB|*, or Mailchimp adds its footer). A campaign that fails a check is not sent. - A regular campaign only: no A/B tests, plain-text-only or automated campaigns.
- Sends count against your Mailchimp plan.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp refused: Your Campaign is not ready to send. … | The campaign fails one of Mailchimp's checks. | Open the campaign in Mailchimp to see which, fix it there or in the step, and try again. |
| Mailchimp refused: … about the reply-to or from address | Reply-to is not on a domain verified in Mailchimp. | Verify the domain in Mailchimp, or use an address on one that is. |
| Mailchimp refused: The requested resource could not be found. | Campaign is not a campaign in this account. | Use campaignId from Create a campaign. |
| Subject is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. | The value came out empty. The same for From name, Reply-to, Content (HTML) and Campaign. | Check the values it reads. |
| Could not load the audiences | Mailchimp did not give the list, in its own words. "What you set here is kept." | Select Try again, or Reconnect if offered. |
| Mailchimp refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections. | The key was revoked in Mailchimp. | Revoke the connection and reconnect it with a new key. |
