Mailchimp · Add or remove tags — Tags a subscriber, or takes tags off — changes the tags on one person in a Mailchimp audience. Tags drive Mailchimp's segments and automations, so tagging someone customer when they pay can move them into the right emails.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the step's settings but cannot change them.
Before you start
- A Mailchimp connection in this workspace — see Connect Mailchimp.
- The person in the audience — add them with Add or update a subscriber first if they may be new.
Steps
- Select + where the tags should change. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Add or remove tags. Or search Mailchimp.
- In Connection, choose your Mailchimp connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
- In Audience, choose the audience. The list reads Loading your audiences… first.
- In Email, their address — for example rohan@consulace.com, or a value from an earlier step.
- Under Action, choose Add (the default) or Remove.
- In Tags, the tags — Separate several with commas. For example customer, paid-2026.
- Select Run this step to try it.
Output
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
email |
The address. |
added or removed |
The tags it added or took off, as a list. |
Good to know
- A tag Mailchimp does not have yet is made when you add it.
- Removing a tag the person does not have is not an error.
- Other tags stay. Only the tags named here change.
- Runs once per item — one person each time.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp refused: … saying the member cannot be found | Nobody with that address is in the audience. | Add them first with Add or update a subscriber. |
| Tags is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. / Email is empty when the step ran — … | The value came out empty. | Check the values it reads. |
| Could not load the audiences | Mailchimp did not give the list, in its own words. "What you set here is kept." | Select Try again, or Reconnect if offered. |
| Mailchimp refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections. | The key was revoked in Mailchimp. | Revoke the connection and reconnect it with a new key. |
