Two SendGrid steps keep your marketing contacts in step with the rest of the business. SendGrid · Add or update a contact — Adds someone to SendGrid's contacts, or updates them — adds a contact by email, or updates the one already there, and can put them on a list. SendGrid · Remove a contact from a list — Takes someone off a SendGrid list; the contact stays — takes them off one list.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.
Before you start
- A SendGrid connection in this workspace, with a key that has Marketing permission — see Connect SendGrid.
- To use a list, the list made in SendGrid under Marketing › Contacts.
- To set custom fields, the fields made in SendGrid first.
Steps
Add or update a contact:
- Select + where the contact should be added. In the step picker, open Apps, select SendGrid, then Add or update a contact. Or search SendGrid.
- In Connection, choose your SendGrid connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
- In Email, the contact's address — for example rohan@consulace.com, or a value from an earlier step.
- Optional: in First name and Last name, their name — Rohan, Mehta.
- Optional: under Custom fields, select Add a field. Type the field's name as it is in SendGrid — for example city — and in Value what goes in it. By their name in SendGrid.
- Optional: in Add to list, choose a list. The list reads Loading your lists… first; each shows how many contacts it has, such as Newsletter · 1240 contacts.
- Select Run this step to try it.
Remove a contact from a list:
- In the step picker, open Apps, select SendGrid, then Remove a contact from a list.
- In Connection, choose your SendGrid connection.
- In List, choose the list.
- In Email, the contact's address.
- Select Run this step to try it.
Output
Add or update a contact:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
jobId |
SendGrid's id for the change. SendGrid makes it a few minutes later, not at once. |
email |
The address, as written in Email. |
Remove a contact from a list:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
removed |
True when the contact was taken off the list; false when SendGrid found no contact with that address. |
email |
The address. |
contactId |
SendGrid's id for the contact, when it was found. |
Good to know
- SendGrid adds and updates contacts in the background. The step succeeds when SendGrid takes the change; the contact appears in SendGrid a few minutes later. A contact added a moment ago may not be found yet by Remove a contact from a list.
- The email address is the contact. Running it again for the same address updates the contact rather than adding a second one. Empty First name and Last name leave what SendGrid has.
- Removing from a list keeps the contact in SendGrid, and on any other list.
- Runs once per item — one contact each time.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SendGrid has no custom field named city. | A name under Custom fields is not a field in SendGrid. | Use the field's name exactly as SendGrid shows it, or make the field in SendGrid. |
| SendGrid refused: … | SendGrid turned the change away, in its own words — often an address it does not accept. | Check Email and the values. |
| SendGrid refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections. | The key was deleted, or it has no Marketing permission. | Give the key Marketing in SendGrid, or reconnect with a new key. |
| Email is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. | The value came out empty. | Check the value it reads. |
| Nothing to pick — "SendGrid has no contact lists yet. Make one under Marketing › Contacts, then Refresh." | There are no lists. | Make one in SendGrid, then Refresh. |
| Could not load the lists | SendGrid did not give the list, in its own words. "What you set here is kept." | Select Try again, or Reconnect if offered. |
