Three Mailchimp steps work on one person in one audience, by their email address. Mailchimp · Add or update a subscriber — Adds someone to a Mailchimp audience, or updates them. Mailchimp · Find a subscriber — Looks someone up in an audience by email. Mailchimp · Unsubscribe — Unsubscribes someone from an audience.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.

Before you start

A Mailchimp connection in this workspace — see Connect Mailchimp.

Steps

Add or update a subscriber:

  1. Select + where the person should be added. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Add or update a subscriber. Or search Mailchimp.
  2. In Connection, choose your Mailchimp connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
  3. In Audience, choose the audience. The list reads Loading your audiences… first; each shows how many members it has, such as Consulace newsletter · 2140 members.
  4. In Email, their address — for example rohan@consulace.com, or a value from an earlier step.
  5. Under Status, choose Subscribed (the default), Pending or Unsubscribed — Pending sends Mailchimp's confirmation email first.
  6. Optional: under Merge fields, select Add a field for each detail. Type the merge field's tag — The audience's merge fields — FNAME, LNAME. — and in Value what goes in it: FNAME Rohan, LNAME Mehta.
  7. Optional: in Tags, tags to give them — Separate several with commas. For example customer, india.
  8. Select Run this step to try it.

Find a subscriber:

  1. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Find a subscriber.
  2. In Connection, choose your Mailchimp connection, and in Audience, the audience.
  3. In Email, the address to look for — Nobody found is an answer, not a failure: found is false.
  4. Select Run this step. Add an IF on {{ steps.find_a_subscriber.found }} to go one way when they are there and another when not.

Unsubscribe:

  1. In the step picker, open Apps, select Mailchimp, then Unsubscribe.
  2. In Connection, choose your Mailchimp connection, and in Audience, the audience.
  3. In Email, their address.
  4. Select Run this step.

Output

Add or update a subscriber, Unsubscribe and, when someone is found, Find a subscriber:

Field What it is
id Mailchimp's id for the member.
email Their address as Mailchimp has it.
status subscribed, pending, unsubscribed, cleaned or transactional.
mergeFields Their merge fields — {{ steps.find_a_subscriber.mergeFields.FNAME }}.
tags Their tags' names.
found Find a subscriber only: true.

When Find a subscriber finds nobody, it gives only found — false — and email.

Good to know

  • The email address is the person. Add or update a subscriber adds someone new, and updates someone already in the audience — including their status. Choosing Subscribed for someone who unsubscribed subscribes them again, where Mailchimp allows it.
  • Pending sends Mailchimp's own confirmation email; the person is subscribed once they confirm. Use it when they have not already agreed to hear from you.
  • Tags are added, never taken off, by Add or update a subscriber. To remove tags, see Tag a Mailchimp subscriber.
  • Merge fields use the tags shown in Mailchimp under the audience's Settings › Audience fields and merge tags. A required merge field must have a value for someone new.
  • Unsubscribe keeps the person in the audience, marked unsubscribed, so they are not mailed again.
  • Runs once per item — one person each time.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Mailchimp refused: … is in a compliance state … The person unsubscribed or bounced, and Mailchimp will not subscribe them again from outside. Choose Pending, so they confirm for themselves.
Mailchimp refused: … looks fake or invalid, please enter a real email address. Mailchimp does not accept the address. Check Email.
Mailchimp refused: Your merge fields were invalid. … A merge field is missing, unknown, or the wrong kind of value. Check the tags and values against the audience's settings.
Mailchimp refused: The requested resource could not be found. Unsubscribe: nobody with that address is in the audience. Check the address and the audience.
Email is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. The value came out empty. Check the value it reads.
Nothing to pick — "This Mailchimp account has no audience yet." The account has no audience. Make one in Mailchimp, then Refresh.
Could not load the audiences Mailchimp did not give the list, in its own words. "What you set here is kept." Select Try again, or Reconnect if offered.
Mailchimp refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections. The key was revoked in Mailchimp. Revoke the connection and reconnect it with a new key.
