Two Discord steps post to a channel. Discord · Send a message — Posts to a Discord channel — posts text, with an optional embed: a card under the message with a title, text, link and colour. Discord · Send a file — Posts a file from an earlier step to a Discord channel — posts a file, with words to go with it. Both work with either kind of Discord connection.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.

Before you start

  • A Discord connection in this workspace — a webhook URL or a bot token. See Connect Discord.
  • With a bot: the bot in the server, allowed to post in the channel.
  • For Send a file: a step before it that gives a file. See Pass files between steps.

Steps

Send a message:

  1. Select + where the message should be posted. In the step picker, open Apps, select Discord, then Send a message. Or search Discord.
  2. In Connection, choose your Discord connection. If it is the only one, it is already chosen.
  3. In Channel:
    • with a bot, choose the channel — With a bot: channels in the bot's servers. With a webhook, leave it empty — it posts to its own channel. The list reads Loading your channels… first; each shows its server, such as #alerts · Consulace.
    • with a webhook, leave it empty. The list says Could not load the channels — "A webhook posts to its own channel — leave Channel empty." That is expected.
  4. In Message, type the text — Discord's own formatting: bold, italic, code. Up to 2,000 characters. Use {{ }} for values from earlier steps.
  5. Optional, with a webhook only: in Post as, the name it posts under — Webhook only — the name it posts under. Empty uses the webhook's own. — and in Picture, an https address of the picture beside it.
  6. Optional, an embed:
    • In Embed title, its title — Optional — a card under the message.
    • In Embed text, its text.
    • In Embed link, the address the title opens — The address the embed's title opens.
    • In Embed colour, the colour of its edge, as a hex colour such as #1D4ED8.
  7. Select Run this step to post a test.

Send a file:

  1. In the step picker, open Apps, select Discord, then Send a file.
  2. In Connection, choose your Discord connection.
  3. In Channel, as above — choose it with a bot, leave it empty with a webhook.
  4. In File, drag in the file from an earlier step — A file from an earlier step. Up to 10 MB on most servers.
  5. Optional: in Message, words to go with it.
  6. Select Run this step to post a test.

To post with a bot into a channel from an earlier step — or into a thread made by Create a thread — select Use a value beside Channel and type {{ }}, such as {{ steps.create_a_thread.id }}. Choose from the list goes back. Refresh reloads the list after the bot joins a server.

Output

Field What it is
id The message's id. Add a reaction and Create a thread take it.
channelId The channel it was posted in.
content The text as posted.
timestamp When Discord took it, in UTC.

Later steps read it as, for example, {{ steps.send_a_message.id }}.

Good to know

  • A message needs words or an embed. Fill in Message, or the embed's Embed text. A file needs neither.
  • Embed colour must be six hex digits, with or without #. Anything else is left out and the card has no colour.
  • Post as and Picture do nothing with a bot — it posts as itself.
  • Mentions work as in Discord: <@user id>, <#channel id>, and @everyone where the webhook or bot may use it.
  • Runs once per item. Ten items post ten messages. Discord slows down a channel that gets many messages quickly.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
The message is empty — fill in Message, or the embed's title or text. Message and the embed came out empty. Fill in Message, or an embed title or text, or check the values they read.
Channel is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. A bot connection, and no channel chosen. Choose a channel.
Discord refused: Missing Permissions. or Discord refused: Missing Access. The bot may not see or post in that channel. Give the bot's role View Channel, Send Messages (and Attach Files for a file) in the channel.
Discord refused: Unknown Channel. The channel was deleted, or the bot left the server. Choose another channel, or invite the bot again.
Discord refused: Unknown Webhook. The webhook was deleted in Discord. Make a new webhook and reconnect with its address.
Discord refused: … about the size The file is over the server's upload limit. Send a smaller file.
File is not a file from an earlier step. File is text or an address, not a file. Drag in a file from an earlier step.
The file is no longer kept — the run it came from has left the history. The file came from an old run. Run the step that makes the file again.
Nothing to pick — "The bot is in no server with a text channel. Invite it to your server, then Refresh." The bot has joined no server, or the server has no text channel. Invite the bot — see Connect Discord — then Refresh.
Discord refused: 401: Unauthorized. Check the connection's details on Connections. The bot's token was reset. Revoke the connection and reconnect it with the new token.
