Create or edit an image with Stability AI

The Stability AI steps make and change images on your company's own Stability AI credits. Each gives back an image file that later steps can upload, attach or post. Create an image draws one from a description. Upscale an image makes one larger and sharper. Remove a background cuts out the subject — a product photo for a store listing. Edit an image finds something in a picture and replaces it with something else.

Before you start

Steps

Create an image:

1. Select + where the image should be made. In the step picker, open AI, then Stability AI, and select Create an image.
2. In Connection, choose the connection.
3. In Model, keep Stable Image Core (the default — quick and cheap), or choose Stable Image Ultra (the most detailed) or one of the Stable Diffusion 3.5 models.
4. In Prompt, describe the picture, with values in {{ }} — A delivery van in Northwind Logistics' green, parked outside a warehouse at sunrise, photo.
5. Optional: in Leave out, what the picture must not have — text, logos, people.
6. In Aspect ratio, keep 1:1 (the default), or choose another — 16:9 for a banner, 9:16 for a story.
7. Optional: in Style, choose one, such as Photographic or Digital art. Ultra does not use a style.
8. Optional: in Seed, a number. The same prompt and seed give the same image again; leave it empty for a new one each time.
9. In Format, keep PNG (the default), or choose JPEG or WebP.
10. Select Run this step. Output shows the image, with Download.

Upscale an image, Remove a background:

1. In the step picker, under Stability AI, select Upscale an image or Remove a background, and choose the Connection.
2. Under Image, select Add a file and drag in the image from an earlier step. See Pass files between steps.
3. In Format, keep PNG (the default), or choose another. Remove a background offers PNG and WebP, which both keep the background see-through.
4. Select Run this step. Upscale an image makes the picture four times larger.

Edit an image:

1. In the step picker, under Stability AI, select Edit an image, and choose the Connection.
2. Under Image, drag in the image from an earlier step.
3. In Find, say what to replace — the cardboard box.
4. In Replace with, say what goes there — a wooden crate with the Consulace logo.
5. Select Run this step.

Output

Every Stability AI step gives file (the image), contentType, seed and usage. usage holds model, images and seconds; Output shows them as the usage strip. The image travels with the item — drag it into a later step's File or Attachments from Data from earlier steps — and is kept with the run, as every run file is.

Good to know

• Each item is a separate image, and spends credits again. Each test run does too — pin the output once you have an image you like; see Pin a step's output.
• Credits per image depend on the model and the step — see Stability AI's price list. The usage strip counts images, not credits — Stability AI does not say what each call spent. Test on the connection shows the balance left.
• Images Stability AI will not draw — its content rules — fail with its reason, and are not tried again.
• Input images that are very large may be refused by Stability AI; it says so in its reason.
