Eight Todoist steps work with your tasks and projects:

  • Todoist · Create a task — Adds a task to a Todoist project, with a due date, labels and priority.
  • Todoist · Update a task — Changes a task's name, description, labels, priority or due date.
  • Todoist · Move a task — Moves a task to another project, a section, or under another task.
  • Todoist · Complete a task — Ticks off a task — a recurring one moves to its next date.
  • Todoist · Reopen a task — Brings back a completed task.
  • Todoist · Find tasks — Open tasks that match a Todoist filter, or a project's tasks.
  • Todoist · Add a comment — Comments on a task.
  • Todoist · Create a project — Adds a project, on its own or inside another.

Every step except Find tasks is tagged Changes data.

Steps

Create a task:

  1. Select + where the step should go. In the step picker, open Apps, select Todoist, then Create a task. Or search Todoist.
  2. In Connection, choose your Todoist connection.
  3. In Task, type the task — Send Northwind Logistics the onboarding pack.
  4. Optional:
    • Description — more detail.
    • Project — one of yours. Empty: your Inbox.
    • Section — one of the project's sections.
    • Labels — Label names, separated with commas. For example clients.
    • Priority — p1 · most urgent, p2, p3 or p4 · no priority (the default), as Todoist shows them.
    • Due — Words as you would type them in Todoist — tomorrow at 5pm, every Monday — or a date, 2026-10-09, or a time, 2026-10-09T17:00:00Z.
    • Assignee — someone the project is shared with, Asha Raghunathan · asha@consulace.com. Only in a shared project.
  5. Select Run this step to try it. This adds a real task.

Update a task:

  1. In Task id, the task's id — The task's id, or its Todoist link. Usually the id from the step that created or found it.
  2. Fill in only what should change — Task and Description (Empty leaves it.), Labels (Replaces its labels. Empty leaves them.), Priority (Leave it, the default, or p1 to p4), Due (Words, a date or a time, as on Create a task. “no date” removes it; empty leaves it.).

Move a task:

  1. In Task id, the task's id — The task's id, or its Todoist link.
  2. In Move to, choose A project (the default), A section or Under a task.
  3. Choose the Project, or the project and its Section — or, for Under a task, type the Parent task's id or link. The moved task becomes its subtask.

Complete a task, Reopen a task, Add a comment:

  1. In Task id, the task's id or link.
  2. For Add a comment, type the Comment.

Find tasks:

  1. Optional: in Filter, a Todoist filter — Todoist's own filter, as in its Filters view — today | overdue, #Consulace & p1, @clients.
  2. Optional: in Project, a project — Without a filter: this project's tasks. With one: only those of them in this project.
  3. In Most, how many at most — Tasks past this are left out, and the output says so. Up to 1,000. It starts at 100.

Create a project:

  1. Type the project's Name — Northwind Logistics onboarding.
  2. Optional: in Inside project, a project to put it in.

Every list offers Use a value above it, to give an id from an earlier step instead; Choose from the list goes back.

Output

Step What it gives
Create a task, Update a task, Move a task, Reopen a task The task — id, content, description, url, projectId, projectName, sectionId, labels, priority (p1 to p4), dueDate, dueText (the due words, every Monday), assignee, createdAt.
Complete a task id and completed (true).
Find tasks count, tasks (each with the keys above) and first.
Add a comment The comment's id, taskId and text.
Create a project The project's id, name and url.

priority is as Todoist shows it — p1 the most urgent, p4 no priority. dueDate is a date, a time in UTC, or a time with no zone for a task due "at 5pm wherever I am".

Good to know

  • Find tasks gives one item, with count, the list of tasks and the first. When nothing matches, the run goes down When nothing is found instead, with found set to false — see When a Find step finds nothing. When more match than Most, the output carries note — Only the first 100 tasks are kept.
  • Find tasks finds open tasks. Completed tasks are not found. With neither Filter nor Project, it gives every open task.
  • Due words are read by Todoist. Every Monday makes a recurring task; completing a recurring task moves it to its next date rather than closing it.
  • A task in a shared project can be assigned only to someone it is shared with.
  • Each item runs the step once. Ten items add ten tasks.
  • Add a comment's taskId is the task id the step was given: Todoist's answer doesn't name the task.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Task id “…” is not a Todoist id or link. Task id came out as something else. Check the value it reads.
Give at least one thing to change — the task's name, description, labels, priority or due. Update a task has nothing filled in. Fill in what should change.
Priority “…” is not p1, p2, p3 or p4 — p1 is the most urgent. A priority from an earlier step is something else. Give p1 to p4.
Nothing to pick — "Nobody shares this project. Share it in Todoist to assign its tasks, then Refresh." Assignee needs a shared project. Share the project in Todoist, or leave Assignee empty.
"Todoist refused: Task not found." The task was deleted, or belongs to another account. Check the id.
"Todoist refused: …" on Find tasks The filter is not valid Todoist — a misspelt project or label. Try the filter in Todoist's own Filters first.
"Todoist refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections." A new token was issued in Todoist. Select Replace token on the connection.
"Could not reach Todoist: …" or "Todoist did not answer within 30 seconds." Todoist could not be reached. The step can try again — see Make a step try again when it fails.
