Three Shopify steps work with orders. Shopify · Create an order — An order for variants, paid or pending — places an order in your store. Shopify · Find an order — Orders by number or customer email — one item each — looks orders up. Shopify · Add a tag to an order — Adds tags, keeping the ones it has — marks an order so your team, or another workflow, can find it.

Who can do this

Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.

Before you start

A Shopify connection with the orders permissions — see Connect Shopify.

Steps

Create an order:

  1. Select + where the step should go. In the step picker, open Apps, select Shopify, then Create an order. Or search Shopify.
  2. In Connection, choose your Shopify connection.
  3. Under Line items, select Add a field for each variant. In the first box, the variant's id — 44012345678 — and in Value, how many. Each variant's id and how many. The variant's id is variantId from Find products.
  4. Optional: in Customer email, rohan@consulace.com.
  5. In Payment, choose Pending or Paid.
  6. Optional: in Tags, tags separated by commas.
  7. Switch on Email the receipt to have Shopify send the customer its order confirmation. It is off unless you switch it on.
  8. Select Run this step to try it. This places a real order in the store.

Find an order:

  1. In the step picker, open Apps, select Shopify, then Find an order.
  2. In Connection, choose your Shopify connection.
  3. In Order number, the number — #1001 or 1001. Or leave it empty and fill in Customer email — Used when there is no order number.
  4. Select Run this step to try it.

Add a tag to an order:

  1. In the step picker, open Apps, select Shopify, then Add a tag to an order.
  2. In Order, the order's id — The order's id — from a trigger or Find an order. For example {{ trigger.id }}.
  3. In Tags, one or several — Separate several with commas. For example Bizomate, Priority.
  4. Select Run this step to try it.

Output

All three give the same fields for an order. Find an order gives one item for each order found.

Field What it is
id Shopify's id for the order — what Add a tag to an order and Fulfil an order take.
name The order number as customers see it, such as #1001.
email The customer's email.
totalPrice, currency The total, such as 1499.00, and its currency, such as INR.
financialStatus pending, paid, refunded and so on.
fulfillmentStatus Empty until something is sent; then partial or fulfilled.
tags The order's tags, separated by commas.
customerId, customerName The customer's id and name, such as Rohan Mehta.
createdAt When the order was placed.
lineItems A list, each with title, quantity, price and sku.

Good to know

  • Create an order uses the variant's own price. You choose what and how many; Shopify works out the total.
  • The order does not change stock. Shopify keeps stock as it is for an order made this way. Use Update inventory if it should.
  • A line with no number in Value counts as one.
  • Find an order gives up to 50 orders, open, closed or cancelled. The number is looked up with # in front, as Shopify names orders by default. Unless the app has access to all orders in Shopify, only the last 60 days of orders are found.
  • Finding nothing gives no items, and the steps after it do not run. That is not a failure.
  • Add a tag to an order keeps the tags already there, and does not add one the order already has, whatever its capitals.

If something goes wrong

What you see Why What to do
Line items is empty — add each variant's id and how many. No line was filled in. Add a line with a variant's id.
Line items: “…” is not a variant's id. The first box has something other than a number. Use variantId, a number such as 44012345678.
Give an order number or an email to find orders by. Both boxes are empty. Fill in one of them.
Order is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. The value came out empty. Check the value it reads.
Shopify refused: Not Found. No order has that id — often the number (#1001) given instead of the id. Use id from the trigger or Find an order.
Shopify refused: … Shopify did not accept the order, in its own words — for example a variant that no longer exists. Check the values.
