Two Shopify steps work with your store's customers. Shopify · Create or update a customer — A customer in the store, new or changed — adds a customer, or changes one you name by id. Shopify · Find a customer — A customer by email — looks one up, and says plainly when there is nobody.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan. Viewers see the steps' settings but cannot change them.
Before you start
A Shopify connection with the customers permissions — see Connect Shopify.
Steps
Create or update a customer:
- Select + where the step should go. In the step picker, open Apps, select Shopify, then Create or update a customer.
- In Connection, choose your Shopify connection.
- In Customer, leave it empty to add a new customer. To change one, give their id — A customer's id to change them. Empty makes a new one.
- Fill in what you have: Email rohan@consulace.com, First name Rohan, Last name Mehta, Phone with the country code, and Tags.
- Select Run this step to try it.
Find a customer:
- In the step picker, open Apps, select Shopify, then Find a customer.
- In Connection, choose your Shopify connection.
- In Email, the address — Nobody found is an answer, not a failure: found is false.
- Select Run this step to try it.
A common pair: Find a customer, then an If on found — update the customer when true, create one when false.
Output
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
found |
Find a customer only: true when someone has that email. When false, the only other field is email. |
id |
Shopify's id for the customer. |
email, firstName, lastName, phone |
As Shopify has them. |
tags |
Their tags, separated by commas. |
ordersCount |
How many orders they have placed. |
totalSpent |
What they have spent in all, such as 1499.00. |
Good to know
- Fields left empty are left alone when you change a customer.
- Tags replace the customer's tags when you change a customer — give every tag they should have.
- Email and phone are unique in Shopify. Shopify refuses a new customer with an email or phone another customer already has; find them first and update instead.
- Find a customer gives the first match for the email.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify refused: email has already been taken | A customer already has that email. | Use Find a customer first, then update them by id. |
| Shopify refused: phone is invalid | The phone number is not one Shopify accepts. | Include the country code — +919876543210 (an example number). |
| Email is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. | The value came out empty in Find a customer. | Check the value it reads. |
| Shopify refused: Not Found. | No customer has that id. | Check the value in Customer. |
