The Image steps change images between steps: a product photo resized for a listing, a receipt photo turned the right way up, a watermark on an image before it is posted. Each one is its own step. No connection is needed.

The steps

Step What it does
Resize an image Makes an image larger or smaller — to a Width, a Height or both, with Keep the ratio on by default.
Crop an image Cuts out part of an image — From the left, From the top, Width and Height, in pixels.
Rotate an image Turns an image a quarter, half or three quarters round — 90° right, 180° or 90° left.
Convert an image Saves an image as PNG, JPEG or WebP, with a Quality for JPEG and WebP.
Add text to an image Writes text on an image — a watermark, a caption, a code.
Get image information Gives an image's width, height, format and size, without changing it.

Before you start

An earlier step must bring the image — a form's File field, Outlook · Get an attachment, or another step that gives a file. See Pass files between steps.

Steps

  1. Select + after the step that brings the image. In the step picker, open Utilities, select Image — No connection needed — then the step. Or search image.
  2. Under Image, select Add a file and drag in the file from Data from earlier steps — PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or BMP from an earlier step, up to 20 MB.
  3. Fill in the step's own settings:
    • Resize an image — Width and Height, in pixels. With Keep the ratio on, one of the two is enough, and the image fits inside both if you give both, never stretched. Off, the image takes exactly the width and height given.
    • Crop an image — From the left and From the top (0 unless you change them), then the Width and Height of the part to keep, in pixels.
    • Rotate an image — Turn: 90° right (the default), 180° or 90° left.
    • Convert an image — Format: WebP (the default), PNG or JPEG. Quality: 1 to 100, for JPEG and WebP. Lower is smaller — 85 unless you change it.
    • Add text to an image — Text, such as © Northwind Logistics or a value in {{ }}. Where: one of nine places, Bottom right by default. Text size in pixels, 32 unless you change it. Colour: As #RRGGBB, or #AARRGGBB to see through it — #FFFFFF, white, unless you change it.
  4. Select Run this step, then check Output. The new image shows with Download.

Output

Every step except Get image information adds the new image to the item under file, with its width and height in pixels. Get image information adds width, height, format (png, jpeg, webp, gif or bmp) and size, in bytes, and makes no file.

The item's other fields are kept. Use the image in a later step by dragging it in from Data from earlier steps, or with {{ $json.file }}.

Good to know

  • Images up to 20 MB. A larger image stops the step and says so.
  • Each step makes a new file, named after the original; the original stays on the earlier step's output. Chain steps for several changes — resize, then convert, then add text.
  • A JPEG or WebP stays a JPEG or WebP through Resize, Crop, Rotate and Add text. A PNG, GIF or BMP comes out as a PNG. To choose the format, use Convert an image.
  • An animated GIF keeps only its first frame.
  • Photos are not turned by the orientation a phone records. If a photo comes out on its side, add Rotate an image.
  • A crop that runs past the edge is cut at the edge, so the part kept can be smaller than the width and height given.
  • Text is written in Noto Sans, a little in from the edge, on one line. Long text can run off the image; make Text size smaller.
  • Each step runs once per item.

If something goes wrong

What the run says Why What to do
… is over 20 MB, the most an image step takes. The image is too large. Ask for a smaller image, or resize it before it reaches Bizomate.
… is not an image this step can read — PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or BMP. The file is another format, such as HEIC or SVG — or not an image. Check the earlier step's Output tab.
… could not be read as an image. The file is damaged. Ask for the image again.
Give a width, a height, or both. Resize an image has neither Width nor Height. Fill in at least one.
“…” is not a number of pixels from 1 to 20,000. Width, Height or Text size is not a whole number in that range. Type a whole number of pixels.
Width “…” is not a whole number from 1 to 20,000. (or Height; or From the left / From the top … from 0 to 20,000) A crop setting is empty, or not a whole number in range. Type a whole number of pixels.
The crop starts outside the … × … image. From the left or From the top is past the image's edge. Use Get image information for its size first.
Quality “…” is not a whole number from 1 to 100. Quality is out of range. Type a number from 1 to 100.
Colour “…” is not one — write it as #FFFFFF. Colour is not written as a colour code. Write it as #RRGGBB, such as #FFFFFF.
Text is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. Text names a value the item does not have. Check the step's Input; correct the value in {{ }}.
Image is empty. Choose a file from an earlier step. Image has no file. Drag in an image from Data from earlier steps.
