A Trello connection lets workflows create, update and move cards, comment, add checklist items, labels and members, find cards and make lists — and start a run the moment a card is added, moved, changed or commented on, or as its due date nears. It connects with three things from Trello: an API key and its API secret, from a Power-Up of yours, and a token you allow with that key. Everything the steps do is done as the person who allowed the token.
Who can do this
- In Bizomate: workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan — Trello is not a premium connection. Viewers see the connection but cannot add or change it.
- In Trello: anyone can make a key and token for their own account. They reach the boards that account is a member of.
Steps
In Trello, get the API key and secret:
- Sign in to Trello and go to trello.com/power-ups/admin.
- If you have no Power-Up yet, select New, and fill in the form — Name Bizomate, the Trello Workspace (Consulace), and your email. Select Create.
- Open your Power-Up, then the API key tab, and select Generate a new API key.
- Copy the API key, and the Secret shown beside it.
Allow a token with the key:
- In a new browser tab, open
https://trello.com/1/authorize?expiration=never&scope=read,write&response_type=token&key=<your key>, with your API key in place of<your key>. - Trello asks whether to allow the Power-Up to use your account. Select Allow.
- Trello shows the token — it starts
ATTA. Copy it.
In Bizomate, add the connection:
- Select Connections in the bar at the top, then + Add connection.
- Under Productivity, select Trello. It reads "Stored credential".
- In Connection name, type a name — for example Consulace Trello.
- Paste the key in API key — trello.com/power-ups/admin › your Power-Up (make one if you have none) › API key › Generate a new API key.
- Paste the secret in API secret — From the same Power-Up admin page, beside the API key. Bizomate checks Trello's webhook signatures with it.
- Paste the token in Token — placeholder
ATTA…. The help under it gives the same address as above. - Leave Test the connection before saving ticked. Bizomate asks Trello whose token it is before keeping it.
- Select Save connection. The button reads Testing while Trello is asked.
The toast "Connection added" says what Trello answered — for example "“Consulace Trello” is ready. Reached Rohan Mehta · Trello."
What happens next
- The connection appears under Productivity. Its panel shows Replace token, Test and Revoke — never the secret or the token. Stored encrypted. Secret fields are never shown again after you save.
- Test answers with the account's full name — Reached Rohan Mehta · Trello.
- Trello steps and triggers list it under Connection. Their Board list shows the open boards the account is a member of, each with its Trello Workspace — Consulace clients · Consulace.
Good to know
- The API secret is for the instant triggers. Bizomate checks every event Trello sends against it, so an event that is not Trello's starts nothing. The steps never send it anywhere.
- The token does not expire — the address above asks for one that never does — unless you revoke it in Trello. To see or revoke it, in Trello select your profile picture, then Settings, then Applications.
- To replace the token or key — after revoking the token, or generating a new key — open the connection's panel and select Replace token, fill in all three fields again and select Replace token. The old ones are used until then. The toast "Token replaced" says "Workflows that use “Consulace Trello” use the new key from their next run." A new key needs a new token too: allow it again with the new key.
- Signing in with Trello — through your Atlassian account — instead of a key and token is not offered yet.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Trello refused it — "Trello refused: invalid token. Check the connection's details on Connections. Nothing was saved." | The token was mistyped or revoked, or it was allowed with another key. | Allow the token again with the address above, using the same key. |
| Trello refused it — "Trello refused: invalid key. Check the connection's details on Connections. Nothing was saved." | The API key was mistyped, or a new one was generated. | Copy the key again from the Power-Up's API key tab. |
| "Fill in API key.", "Fill in API secret." or "Fill in Token." | A box is empty. | Fill it in. |
| Nothing to pick — "The token reaches no open board. Make one in Trello, then Refresh." | The account is a member of no open board. | Make a board, or ask someone to add the account to theirs, then Refresh. |
| "Could not reach Trello: …" or "Trello did not answer within 30 seconds." | Trello could not be reached. | Try again in a few minutes. |
