Steps
Create an item:
- Select + where the step should go. In the step picker, open Apps, select monday.com, then Create an item. Or search monday.
- In Connection, choose your monday.com connection.
- In Board, choose the board — Boards the token can see. For example Client onboarding.
- Optional: in Group, the group — Empty: the board's top group. For example This week.
- In Item name, type the name — Onboard Northwind Logistics.
- Under Columns, each row is one of the board's columns, with what it takes — status — a label, people — emails or user ids, date, number, dropdown — labels, commas between, checkbox — true or false, connected items — item ids. Fill in the ones you need — Status Working on it, Owner asha@consulace.com. Only the columns you fill in are set. A status takes its label, people an email or user id, a date 2026-10-09, a dropdown its labels with commas between.
- Optional: turn on Add labels that are missing — A status or dropdown label the board does not have yet is added to it, instead of the step failing.
- Select Run this step to try it. This adds a real item.
Update column values:
- Choose the Board — The board the item is on.
- In Item, the item's id — The item's id — the number in its address. Usually the
idfrom the step that created or found it. - Optional: in New name, a new name — Empty leaves the name.
- Under New values, fill in only the columns to change — Only the columns you fill in change. A value an earlier step did not give leaves its column as it is.
- Optional: turn on Add labels that are missing.

Output
| Step | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Create an item, Update column values, Move an item to a group, Create a subitem | The item — id, name, url, boardId, boardName, groupId, groupName, createdAt, parentId (a subitem's item), and each column by its title, as its text. |
| Find items | count, items (each with the keys above) and first. |
| Create an update | The update's id, itemId and text. |
| Upload a file to a column | The file's id, name and url, and itemId — one item for each file uploaded. |
Each column comes out as monday.com shows it — Status: Working on it, Owner: Asha Raghunathan.
Good to know
- Find items gives one item, with
count, the list ofitemsand thefirst. When nothing matches, the run goes down When nothing is found instead, withfoundset to false — see When a Find step finds nothing. - Find items looks in one column, for one value. To narrow further, add an If step after it.
- Columns come from the board. After you add a column in monday.com, select Refresh on Columns to see it.
- A status or dropdown label must exist on the column unless Add labels that are missing is on — a value that matches no label fails the step.
- Columns monday.com works out — formulas, mirrors, auto numbers, creation logs, time tracking — and the Files and subitems columns are not offered to set. Files go in with Upload a file to a column.
- Subitems live on their own board in monday.com, with their own columns. A board's subitem columns can be listed only once it has a subitem.
- People take emails of users in the monday.com account, or user ids.
- Each item reaching the step runs it once. Ten rows from an earlier step create ten monday.com items.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Item “…” is not a monday.com id — the number in its address, like 7012345678. | Item came out as something else. | Check the value it reads. |
| Give a new value for at least one column. | Update column values has nothing filled in. | Fill in a column or New name. |
| monday.com has no board 7000000001 this connection can see. Choose the board again. | The board was deleted, or the token's owner cannot see it. | Choose another board. |
| the board has no column named “Stage”. Refresh the columns and choose again. | The column was renamed or deleted. | Select Refresh on Columns. |
| monday.com has no user with the email … in this account. | A people column was given an email of someone outside the account. | Check the email, or give a user id. |
| Due needs a date, like 2026-10-09 — “…” is not one. or Amount needs a number — “…” is not one. | The value does not fit the column. | Give a value of that type. |
| This board has no subitems yet, so their columns are not known. Add a subitem in monday.com first, or leave Columns empty. | The board has never had a subitem. | Add one in monday.com, or leave Columns empty. |
| Nothing to pick — "This board has no Files column. Add one in monday.com first." | The board has no Files column. | Add one in monday.com. |
| monday.com refused it: … | monday.com would not do it — a label that does not exist, say, or no edit access to the board. Its own words follow. | Fix what it says, or turn on Add labels that are missing. |
| "monday.com refused: … Check the connection's details on Connections." | The token was regenerated. | Select Replace token on the connection. |
| "Could not reach monday.com: …" or "monday.com did not answer within 30 seconds." | monday.com could not be reached, or was asked too often. | The step can try again — see Make a step try again when it fails. |
