The QR code steps make a QR code from text or a web address — a payment link, an event ticket, a page about an order — and read one from an image. Each one is its own step. No connection is needed.
Who can do this
Workspace Admins and Editors, on every plan.
The steps
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| Create a QR code | Makes a QR code for text or a web address — a PNG or SVG file. |
| Read a QR code | Reads the text of a QR code in an image. |
Steps
- Select + where the QR code is needed. In the step picker, open Utilities, select QR code — No connection needed — then the step. Or search QR.
- For Create a QR code:
- In Text or address, put the value — such as
https://pay.consulace.com/{{ $json.order_no }}, or a payment link from an earlier step. - In Size, keep 400 or type another number: In pixels, 100 to 2,000. For PNG.
- In Border, keep Standard or choose None: The quiet border scanners look for. Keep it unless the design adds its own.
- In Format, keep PNG or choose SVG.
- In File name, type the name — for example
ticket-NW-20417. The.pngor.svgis added if you leave it off; with no name, the file isqr-code.pngorqr-code.svg.
- In Text or address, put the value — such as
- For Read a QR code, under Image, select Add a file and drag in the image from Data from earlier steps — A photo or picture from an earlier step.
- Select Run this step, then check Output.
Output
Create a QR code adds the file to the item under file. Use it in a later step by dragging it in from Data from earlier steps, or with {{ $json.file }}.
Read a QR code adds text, what the code holds, and found, true or false. No code found is found: false, not a failure — text is then empty — so an IF can send those items another way.
Both keep the item's other fields.
Good to know
- Longer text makes a denser code. A short web address scans most reliably from a printed page. A code holds up to about 2,300 characters of ordinary text, fewer in scripts other than Western European letters; past that the step stops and says so.
- SVG stays sharp at any size, for print; Size applies only to a PNG. PNG suits email and chat.
- Read a QR code reads the first QR code it finds, and tries the image turned round if the code is on its side. It reads QR codes only, not other barcodes.
- Each step runs once per item, so each order or ticket gets its own code.
If something goes wrong
| What the run says | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| That text is too long for a QR code (… characters). Shorten it, or link to it with an address. | The text is over a QR code's limit. | Use a shorter address, or put the text on a page and link to it. |
| Size “…” is not a whole number from 100 to 2,000. | Size is out of range. | Type a number from 100 to 2,000. |
| Text or address is empty when the step ran — an earlier step may not have given the value it names. | Text or address names a value the item does not have. | Check the step's Input; correct the value in {{ }}. |
| … could not be read as an image. | Read a QR code got a file that is not an image, or a damaged one. | Check the earlier step's Output tab. |
| Image is empty. Choose a file from an earlier step. | Image has no file. | Drag in an image from Data from earlier steps. |
